Updated Mayoral statement following incident in Headingley

“My thoughts remain with the victims and wider community following the horrific incident in Headingley at the weekend."

Tracy Brabin, the Mayor of West Yorkshire, said: “My thoughts remain with the victims and wider community following the horrific incident in Headingley at the weekend.

“I want to reassure the public this is a rare occurrence, and I am pleased to see the Policing Minister confirm the Government’s immediate intention to tighten current legislation on the ownership and use of crossbows.

“Safety of women and girls is a top priority. I set up the country’s first dedicated Women’s Safety Unit last year, as it’s only by taking a whole-system approach are we going to make a real difference to keeping women safe and improving outcomes for victims and survivors.

“The Government has also shown its commitment on the issue by announcing extreme misogyny will be treated as a form of extremism and has pledged to halve violence against women and girls in a decade.”

FOR BACKGROUND
