West Yorkshire has been recognised as one of the leading regions in the country for walking, cycling and wheeling.
Being rated joint top in the country by Active Travel England (ATE) means the West Yorkshire Combined Authority is well placed to benefit from future funding for active travel projects in the region.
ATE recently announced its ‘active travel capability ratings’ for 2024, with the Combined Authority retaining its Level 3 status.
Ratings are based on each region’s ability to plan, design and deliver active travel schemes, alongside its partners and local councils.
The Combined Authority is one of just six authorities to achieve this rating, with no other region being placed higher.
Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin, said: “To be recognised as one of the leading regions for active travel is a fantastic achievement.
“Our transformational walking, cycling and wheeling routes are helping people choose more sustainable ways to travel.
“And more funding will help us to build on this work as we create a greener, better-connected West Yorkshire that works for all.”
Capability ratings range from Level 0 to Level 4. Currently no authority is at Level 4, but the West Yorkshire Combined Authority is working towards reaching this in the future.
The delivery of projects like Cottingley to Bingley Cycle Lane, Huddersfield Narrow Canal towpath and School Streets have all contributed to the Combined Authority’s rating.
Free adult cycle training is also funded across West Yorkshire by the Combined Authority, alongside a growing network of ‘active travel hubs’ helping people walk, wheel and cycle.
The rating also takes into account schemes that are currently being delivered, including Bradford City Centre Walking and Cycling Improvements and the A660 Otley Road, as well as ongoing work supporting and encouraging the safe use of highways with local councils and local community groups.
Maintaining Level 3 status means the Combined Authority will be able to access more funding in the future to improve walking and cycling in West Yorkshire.
