Corridor Improvement Programme

The Corridor Improvement Programme aims to deliver benefits for all road users with an emphasis on reducing journey times, in order to improve connectivity and accessibility to economic growth sites including those located in spatial priority areas. The aim is also to improve air quality and contribute towards tackling the climate emergency.

Phase 1

Bradford A6177 ORR Thornton Road

Project overview

This scheme focuses on traffic improvements at two junctions: the A6177 Whetley Lane/Toller Lane junction and the A6177 Thornton Road/Cemetery Road junction.

The improvements will be focused around the provision of two lane approaches where feasible, provision of dedicated turning facilities, and improvements for pedestrians and cyclists.

Once the scheme is delivered, it is anticipated that journey time reliability will improve on the western section of the A6177 Outer Ring Road and congestion will reduce along the A6177 Outer Ring Road.

The scheme's wider social benefits include a more attractive environment for the local community, and better quality of life, with reduced congestion improving air quality and connectivity to employment and housing.

Bradford Great Horton Road

Project overview

The proposed scheme will primarily provide a new link road between the Horton Park Avenue/Cecil Avenue junction and the All Saints Road/Dirkhill Road junction, as well as improvements to the Great Horton Road/Horton Grange Road junction.

The new link road will allow traffic movements to bypass the Great Horton Road/Horton Grange Road / All Saints Road junction.

It is also proposed that All Saints Road is changed to a one way southbound between Great Horton Road and Turner Place. This will reduce traffic conflicts, whilst increasing capacity.

The scheme's wider social benefits include a more attractive environment for the local community, and better quality of life, with reduced congestion improving air quality and connectivity to employment and housing.

Kirklees A62 Smart Corridor

To increase capacity on the A62 to a level which can accommodate the predicted demand from the level of residential and employment growth around the corridor. Easing congestion issues which are a lead cause of air quality issues, slow peak journey times and an inefficient highway network but building in a more sustainable transport network and modal shift from the private car.

The scheme seeks to improve access to existing and proposed employment sites, the Cooper Bridge Enterprise Zone and the strategic and primary route network along with improve the safety of the A62 road corridor, alongside improving the detrimental environmental issues.

Leeds Fink Hill

Project overview

Fink Hill is located on the A6120 Outer Ring Road and forms a four arm signal controlled junction.

Pedestrian facilities at this junction are currently poor with only one pelican crossing on the A6120 (E), holding traffic across all three lanes. There are no formal crossings on Fink Hill, Parkside or A6120 (W). The junction currently experiences congestion which delays movement along the A6120.

The objectives of this scheme are to improve the local area for pedestrian and cycle safety, reduce severance between communities and jobs, increase journey time reliability and reduce traffic congestion and delays.

Leeds Dyneley Arms

Project overview

Dyneley Arms is a key junction on the A660 and A658 between Leeds (12km SE), Bradford (13km SW) and Harrogate (12km NE).

The junction, due to its remote location, currently has no specific pedestrian or cycle facilities.

The proposal is for a ‘quick-win’ scheme involving technology and detection improvements, plus widening the centre of the junction to prevent right-turning vehicles from obstructing ahead movements.

It is anticipated that improved layout will lead to smoother flows and positive impact on air quality. Bus service journey times reliability, advanced stop lines for cyclist and potential new pedestrian crossing will promote alternative mode of transport.

Wakefield A650 Newton Bar

Project overview

The A650 experiences high congestion levels, particularly around Newton Bar and the existing roundabout.

The roundabout connects the A650 dual carriageway to Junction 41 of the M1; the A61 Leeds Road 110 bus routes to the city centre; and Bar Lane to Pinderfields Hospital and the City Fields housing development.

This scheme aims to improve the highway capacity of the roundabout in order to manage the traffic flows and facilitate the development of future housing. The roundabout will be increased in size and traffic signals installed to better control the flow of traffic along the corridor.

This scheme also improves pedestrian and cycle facilities across the roundabout to improve health and safety aspects.
