- A6110 Leeds Outer Ring Road

Project overview
The A6110 forms the South West corner of the Leeds Outer Ring Road and is the busiest section in terms of vehicle numbers. Congestion is evident on a daily basis particularly at the junctions with the key radial A58 (Whitehall Road) and A62 (Gelderd Road) routes.
The scheme includes improvements to a number of junctions on the route between the Stanningley By-pass in the North, to the interface with the Mirfield to Dewsbury to Leeds (M2D2L) scheme. The actual boundary between the two proposals will be on the South East side of the M621 (junction 1).
Key aims
- To provide safe crossing and cycling facilities to encourage more people to travel be active transport for both work and leisure.
- To reduce adverse impacts of transport on the environment and health by promoting active travel. opportunities, helping to contribute towards net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.
- To better manage congestion and reduce traffic delays through upgraded signals and adaptive traffic management making the corridor an easier place to travel through and link with surrounding areas.
- To enhance public transport by providing bus priority infrastructure to improve journey time reliability and increase bus patronage.
- To facilitate and support growth in employment, housing and economic development in areas like Beeston, Cottingley, Morley and Wortley and across Leeds City Region.
- To improve the quality of the local environment and public realm to support regenerations along the route.
- Reduce congestion and journey times along the A6110 corridor.

- A62 Cooper Bridge Improvement

Cooper Bridge junction is where the A62, one of the main transport routes into and out of Huddersfield and on to Leeds and the A644 link to the M62 meet, making it one of the most important gateways into the town.
This scheme involves highway improvements, road widening and junction upgrades to relieve the severe congestion that develops in the Cooper Bridge area, particularly during the morning and evening peak. It would also provide the additional capacity that would make local housing and employment growth possible as well as improving air quality.

- A629 Improvements Programme

Project overview
Our £120m investment into the A629 between Halifax, in Calderdale, and Huddersfield, in Kirklees, will help reduce congestion, improve journey times, boost public transport use and improve cycling and walking conditions.
The works are being funded through the West Yorkshire-plus Transport Fund. In addition to highway improvements, Halifax town centre will also benefit from a new bus and rail interchange, remodelled bus station, new bus routing and improved quality public areas.
There are six separate phases of work within the scheme.
A629 Phase 1a Salterhebble to Shaw Hill
The scheme, which consisted of improvements to the A629 between Jubilee Road and the Free School Lane junction to the south of Halifax town centre was part of the wider A629 Halifax to Huddersfield Corridor Improvements programme funded through the West Yorkshire plus Transport Fund (WY+TF).
The scheme received decision point 5 approval in June 2017 with construction being completed in November 2018 and outstanding snagging works in November 2019.
Project objectives:
- Accessibility improved to and from Halifax, Huddersfield and key employment areas and between surrounding business and residential areas;
- Increased cycle mode share to key attractors and improved pedestrian infrastructure on the A629 corridor;
- Reduced journey times and levels of delay and queuing on the A629 for all modes including a decrease in public transport journey time variability;
- Improved environment via green infrastructure.

A629 Phase 1b Calder and Hebble Junction
The A629 Phase 1b will deliver improvements to the A629 corridor between Ainley Top roundabout junction with Jubilee Road. The primary focus is targeting the current network pinch point of the Calder & Hebble junction.

A629 Phase 2 Halifax Town Centre
The town centre of Halifax will be improved through pedestrianisation of key shopping areas and creation of new public realm at ‘Piece Gardens’, adjacent to the Square Chapel and Central Library. This will create a cultural quarter from the rail station into the town centre.
This major investment project will make Halifax a place where people want to live, work and study, and will attract investment from a whole range of sectors.

A629 Phase 4 Halifax to Huddersfield
The £120m package of schemes along the A629 corridor between Halifax and Huddersfield is driving economic growth by addressing transport and accessibility issues.
The project complements the work of the other stages of the A629 improvement scheme being delivered by Calderdale and Kirklees Councils, by improving walking, cycling and bus travel along the corridor. The improvements will also enable local growth and reduce journey times.
Plans include the creation of a quality bus corridor, with improved bus stops and real time information, creating the opportunity for bus operators to introduce an express service between Huddersfield and Halifax. Junction improvements will also reduce congestion and increase capacity at Ainley Top and West Vale.
Cycling and walking opportunities will also be transformed, with new and improved routes, and better links to key destinations, such as hospitals, Halifax and Elland rail stations, and Elland, Huddersfield and Halifax town centres. These routes will include off-highway green routes and on highway cycle infrastructure.

A629 Phase 5 Ainley Top to Huddersfield
This £120m package of schemes along the A629 corridor between Halifax and Huddersfield is designed to speed up public transport and car journeys along the route, unlock key development sites and deliver improved facilities for cycling and walking.
Planned measures include highway widening, remodelling junctions and signals, improved public transport including a new bus rail interchange and new cycling and walking infrastructure.
Phase 5 of the scheme will see measures to reduce congestion and speed up journey times for all A629 users between Huddersfield ring road and Ainley Top roundabout.
The A629 Halifax to Huddersfield Corridor Improvement is the largest individual scheme within the West Yorkshire-plus Transport Fund.

- Leeds Bradford International Airport Link Route

Project overview
A new route is proposed to give more direct access to the airport from the South, linking in to the A65 North of the outer ring road.
This is intended to create better connections and maximise the role of public transport access and other sustainable travel modes to support a step change in travel behaviours and to unlock the economic benefits of the North West Leeds Employment Hub.
By improving sustainable and active travel connections in the area, the council aims to unlock investment and inclusive growth opportunities and encourage more people to walk, cycle and use public transport.

- South East Bradford Access Road

Project overview
The South East Bradford Link Road scheme aims to provide invaluable resilience for the South Bradford highway network (and beyond). It will provide access to enable the Holme Wood housing growth area and the local enterprise zone.
This scheme aims to reduce congestion for all road users accessing South East Bradford, and parts of Leeds and Kirklees. This will also improve the reliability of public transport within the area and improve air quality.
This scheme will also unlock land for development of housing within the surrounding area and improve safety provisions for pedestrians and cyclists.

- Wakefield City Centre Package

Phase 1 Kirkgate
The Kirkgate Highways scheme is the first phase of the highway improvements identified for the “Wakefield City Centre Package” within the approved West Yorkshire Transport Fund scheme programme.
This scheme aims to improve connectivity within the Kirkgate area and to the rail station, attract new development to support economic growth and improve health and safety within the area.
The Chantry Road roundabout is to be improved and traffic signals are to be installed to help pedestrians and cyclists to cross safely.
By putting new infrastructure in place it is hoped this will support future development and investment in this part of the city.

Phase 2 Ings Road
Ings Road forms part of the city centre inner ring road, to the South of the city centre, aka the “Emerald Ring”, and carries more than 23,000 vehicles a day.
It has a number of large retail developments to the south side, including Sainsbury’s superstore, Homebase, B&M Homestores and Matalan, and a need for improving the vitality of the corridor.
This scheme aims to reduce congestion and improve facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

- York Outer Ring Road Roundabout Improvements

The YORR scheme has been the subject of a comprehensive and long term strategy to review and develop junction improvements at identified roundabouts along the A1237 York Outer Ring Road with the aim to improve strategic and local journey times on this heavily congested route. Each roundabout junction has its own challenges.

1) Wetherby Road was completed in early 2019 and 7) Great North Way will be progressed as a separate phase.
2) to 6) are being progressed alongside an upgrade of the Outer Ring Road to create a dual carriageway between the A19 and A64 Little Hopgrove utilising funding provided by the Department for Transport as part of the Major Road Network programme.
